Richard Prince at Galerie Jöllenbeck, 1978
Köln, Germany: Galerie Jöllenbeck, 1978. Oblong exhibition invitation card for one of the earliest solo exhibitions – the second? – by Richard Prince and his first one outside the US. Extremely scarce document from a deliberately obscured era of Prince’s life and work, who in his official biographic note ‘starts’ his career with a participation in a group show at Castelli Graphics in 1979. According to Bernice Rose (MoMA, 1992) In 1977 Prince made his first photographs of advertising images of pens, watches, and cigarettes from magazines. These were first shown at the Galerie Jöllenbeck, Cologne, in 1978. Furthermore, in Altered Subjects: Photography, Ben Shahn Gallery (William Paterson College) [catalogue, 1980] we find another trace of this early show in RP short bio: EDUCATION: 1968-69 University of Caen, France, (B.A.) SOLO EXHIBITIONS: 1976-77 Ellen Sragrow, N.Y.C. 1978 Gallery Jollenbeck, Cologne 1980 Artísts Space, N.Y C.
