Early European Cross Dressing and Drag Performance collection
Set of 3 antique postcards documenting female impersonators on stage in a number of roles. 1900s-1910s. Cards were printed in Germany, Italy and United Kindom. The artists featured are Georg Bär, Dan Leno and John Lind. While all quite obscure and largely forgotten nowadays they used to be famous performers at the start of the 20th century (maybe with the exception of the elusive Georg Bär). While acceptable as an entertainment trope during the 19th century (and before) seeping into the first decades of 20th, cross-dressing was a problematic issue in public sphere, widely condemned and as the years progressed much criminalised. Thus rare portraits like these provide and preserve visual evidence of early drag culture decades before LGBTQ communities publicly claimed and articulated their identities or even organized openly in communities for that matter. A striking reference point of marginalised self expression, outside the confines of everyday society, exploring gender nonconformity in the early moderinst years. The John Lind card has been mailed. Excellent condition.
