Constructions

New York, United States: Bertha Schaefer Gallery, 1957. 23x15,5 cm. Threefold.

Exhibition invite / catalogue. Imporant document from early posthumous show (the 1 st) after only two exhibitions (1951; 1955) that Greene had over her rather brief lifetime. She was one of the earliest American artists, possibly the first, to produce non-objective relief sculptures in the early 1930s. She synthesized Cubist and Russian Constructivists, progressing towards geometrical purity until the early 1940s after which she started incorporating gestural elements and moving away from her groundbreaking constructions to painting. This latter part of her work was featured in the two exhibitions during her lifetime - making the 1957 show the first one to examine and showcase her intriguing construction pieces. Greene apart from actively exploring the avant-garde tendencies of her time was politically active in leftist artists' organizations while she helped establish the Unemployed Artists' Group that was formed to lobby for federal support for unemployed painters, sculptors, and printmakers. She was also a founding member of the American Abstract Artists organization, in 1937, being its first paid employee. Largely overlooked both during her lifetime and after that she was unjustly overshadowed- as was usually the case - by her husband Balcomb Greene, making all original material pertaining to her work difficult to come by. This particular copy comes from the archive of Wildenstein gallery.
