De Poppen van Harry Van Tussenbroek
Rotterdam, The Netherlands: Brusse, 1929. 21,2x16,6 cm. Softcover. Dutch. 48 pp.
Photobook documenting the dolls of Harry Van Tussenbroek (1879-1963). Profusely illustrated in b&w with 56 photos of dolls and an introduction by W. F. Goude. Van Tussenbroek who was more of a doll maker than a puppeteer per se, exhibited his dolls quite widely from the mid 1930s onwards. He never sold any during his lifetime. After his death and according to his will - although there were attempts to overide the catastrophic clause, which finally was upheld in court - all his 200 dolls were destroyed leaving only ghostly evidence of their existence in photographs. Made from a variety of leftover materials they evoked strangeness and uneasiness, often combining folk supernatural elements in an eclectic, almost syncretic way. This first and important monograph on Van Tussenbroek's work is complimented by a striking De Stijl cover here excellently preserved. Rare. Near Fine.
